Mud Pies

Spring brings lots of new things...rain, flowers, babies, and of course, science fairs!  So, since I am in charge of the science fair and I still had no baby, I decided it would be prudent for my children to actually participate in the science fair.  And naturally, we waited until the day before the fair to start thinking about it! Luckily, the kids picked some great experiments!

Here are Kaili's MUD PIES

First, she made some bath salts (sea salt mixed with food coloring and oils...we used raspberry, orange, almond extract, and peppermint...smelled divine!)

Kaili's favorite was the almond extract :-)
Next, we made the "MUD" (baking soda mixed with water...just enough to make it feel like mud, and food coloring.  We were going for a mud color...but apparently blue, green and yellow food coloring just make an odd green...who knew red was so important!?)

Then she had at it...decorating her Mud Pies!
Now the fun part...Vinegar!

The baking soda combined with vinegar caused a reaction!  (the salts were not needed, just fun to decorate with and they smelled really good!)  Kaili had fun using up half a Costco-sized bag of baking powder for her science art :-)  Dad even came and helped her out towards the end (she said that was her favorite part!)

If you feel like having some fun, this is a goodie :-)  Just make sure to do it next to a hose spicket.  I figured that out the hard way!  Oops.
